How was Mickey Mouse created? Walt Disney began his first series of fully animated films in 1927, featuring the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. When his distributor appropriated the rights to the character, Disney altered Oswald's appearance and created a new character that ultimately became Mickey Mouse.

Everything was not okay. Walt knew he had to come up with a new character, and fast. Walt's daughter Diane Disney Miller recalled, “It was on that long train ride that dad conceived of a new cartoon subject, a mouse who was then refined and further developed by Ub Iwerks, and given his name by my mother.”

Mickey's heyday was the 1930s; in the 1940s his popularity on the screen was overtaken by Donald Duck and Goofy. In all, there have been 121 Mickey Mouse theatrical cartoons, with a 30-year gap between The Simple Things (1953) and Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983).
