Suddenly, instant coffee was awesome! Thanks to one of the latest coffee trends, everyone is suddenly trying the dalgona coffee recipe. And that’s not so easy.
Of course, I also had to try (I’m a coffee-addicted and I like variety!). Soon I was able to make a beautiful, creamy iced coffee with my own TikTok coffee recipe. And I’d love to share that with you!
Dalgona Coffee: Where Does the Coffee Trend Come From?
The coffee trend started with South Korean actor Jung Il-woo, who ordered whipped coffee in Macau for a TV show. He compared the taste to a Korean honeycomb toffee: dalgona.
The drink then went viralwith the #dalgonacoffeechallenge on South Korea’s YouTube and then TikTok. It is bizarre to think that there was no ‘dalgona coffee’ before January.
So a lot of people think it’s Korean coffee, but it’s not quite that! Jung Il-woo drank the drink in Macau, but apparently dalgona coffee is based on the Indian drink phenti hui coffee (beaten coffee).
Making creamy iced coffee with… instant coffee?
When I saw the trend, I thought, “Weird.” I drink a lot of instant coffee while traveling because it’s easy, but to make something delicious with instant coffee? I never thought of that myself. Obviously, I had clearly never heard of Greek frappés.
I also tried to make the recipe with a good espresso, but that’s impossible – save yourself the trouble!
Isn’t it just a Greek frappé?
I told you, I didn’t know Greek frappés yet. I’ve never been to Greece either. But this coffee trend got some backlash: the Greek frappé has been made with instant coffee, sugar, and water for years.
It’s slightly different though. With a frappé, cold water is usually used and it’s mixed shorter, making it more ‘foam’ than a frothy cream. Then the mixture is poured into a cup of ice first, and then water or milk is added.
Make our Korean Dalgona candy recipe too! It’s the cookie from the famous Squid Game Netflix series.
How to Make Dalgona Coffee?
If you do it right, it’s really easy. The ratio of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water is 1:1:1. For a large glass, I used 2 tablespoons of all the ingredients. But if you want more whipped coffee, you can easily customize the recipe.
Watch out! Use hot water, with cold water it doesn’t work as well.
Grab a deep bowl and start mixing! You can work with a whisk, but you’ll have to whisk for over 15 minutes. The best and fastest result is achieved with a mixer. Mix for about 4 minutes – or until you have mixed the desired thickness.
As with whipped cream and egg whites: the longer you mix, the thicker the mixture. It also becomes lighter in color.
You can vary with the ratio of instant coffee and sugar, so if you want a little sweeter coffee, throw in an extra scoop of sugar!
Don’t like coffee? Try Matcha Dalgona!
Vegan iced coffee
Nice to know: this dalgona coffee recipe can easily be made vegan! Instant coffee is vegan and you can use vegetable milk (make it extra creamy with coconut milk for example!).
We use Nescafé instant coffee in this recipe!

Dalgona Coffee Recipe
This TikTok whipped coffee is incredibly easy. This frappé is perfect for summer days and is deliciously frothy!
Boil water and take a deep bowl (otherwise it will splash).
In the bowl, mix the instant coffee, sugar and hot water with a mixer until frothy. The longer you mix, the thicker it will become (just like whipped cream). With a whisk it takes at least fifteen minutes before you get a thick mixture! You can, but you need a lot of strength and patience.
Fill a glass ¾ with milk and ice cubes. Spoon the whipped instant coffee mixture onto the milk with a spoon.
It tastes best to mix everything well before drinking, also so you can taste if you want to add more sugar.
Notes
Do you like strong coffee? Fill your glass with less milk! You can also use an extra scoop instant coffee in the recipe.
Do you like sweet coffee? You can also make the recipe with 3 scoops of sugar.

If you have instant coffee, sugar, and milk, you're fluffy coffee ready. It's super simple: mix equal parts coffee, sugar, and hot water, then whip until it turns into a luxe and silky thick creamy foam. Spoon it on to some iced milk (which is literally just milk with ice in it) then enjoy, no Starbucks run needed.
Its general recipe involves mixing instant coffee, sugar, and boiled water together until it reaches — as baking instructions would put it — soft peaks. The process is quite labor intensive, with some claiming it took 30 minutes of mixing to achieve the perfect consistency.
Dalgona coffee is commonly made with a frothy milk topping, while Frappes may include a touch of cream for added richness. The choice of milk also plays a role, as some prefer using dairy milk for a creamier texture, while others opt for plant-based alternatives like almond or oat milk for a lighter option.
The original recipe uses equal parts of white sugar, instant coffee and water, and for our gula melaka dalgona recipe, we used slightly more gula melaka than water as the gula melaka is less sweet than white sugar. Using sufficient sugar will ensure that you achieve a fluffy, cloudlike foam.
For the Dalgona coffee I followed a recipe that is widely cited: 2 Tbsp instant coffee powder, 2 Tbsp sugar, and 2 Tbsp of hot water (approximately 80 °C) in a bowl. I used Lavazza brand Intenso instant coffee powder.
While it's been around for a few years, this trend is likely to become even more popular moving forward. Nitro cold brewing uses a pressurized valve to infuse nitrogen gas into the coffee, a process similar to that of home-brewing beer. The process begins with regular cold brew.
Cold Brew Craze: The cold brew craze continues to dominate the coffee scene. This smooth, less acidic coffee is perfect for hot summer days and those seeking a caffeine boost without the bitterness.
On TikTok alone, videos with the hashtag #ThatGirl have racked up over two billion views. The idea behind them is to encourage women to become the most optimised version of themselves. On the surface, That Girl content seems harmless.
Instant energy boost: Just like your regular coffee, dalgona coffee can improve your energy levels, making you feel less tired and smarter. Slightly less caffeine: Research has shown that too much caffeine can increase your risk of anxiety, upset stomach, restlessness, tremors, fast heartbeat, and disrupted sleep.
After the drink spread to South Korea, it was renamed "dalgona coffee" which is derived from dalgona, a Korean sugar candy, due to the resemblance in taste and appearance, though most dalgona coffee does not actually contain dalgona.
The key component to making Dalgona Coffee is the instant coffee . It's the magic from instant coffee that creates this dense and foamy topping, which has a lot to do with the drying process of the coffee granules. A common technique that is similar to dalgona coffee is beaten coffee .

Dalgona coffee is a whipped, frothy iced coffee drink made with instant coffee, sugar, water, and milk. Also known as “whipped coffee”, “frothy coffee”, or “fluffy coffee”, dalgona coffee has two distinct layers made from whipped coffee cream sitting on top of iced milk.
The only difference is that the coffee is in the froth part on the Dalgona coffee and the milk is underneath :) Normal coffee is all mixed together with less froth.
Whipped coffee is also known as Dalgona coffee and it is very popular in South Korea. It's also common in Greece where it's called Frappe Coffee and in India where it's called Beaten Coffee. The trending name for it from TikTok though is just whipped coffee.
